Used to Think

I used to think of love as a fairytale ending,
where some miraculous man in a satin black tux
would show up at your feet, begging you to be the love of his life forever.
We all had a soulmate and
I should save my body for him,
and maybe I would know he was “the one” on sight; I used to think.
I used to think there was a man to cherish me and take care of me.
we’d have children with laughter and adventure
in every room of our big home.
We’d grow old together in our rocking chairs,
with our coffee in the morning,
and our whiskey at dusk; I used to think.
I used to think I deserved kindness and patience instead of anger,
because he would look at me with the whole moon in his eyes;
Our souls would become old friends.
God loved me, people were honest,
and the world was fair- at least to those who deserved it;
I used to think.
